Makelesi Wati Raisele: A Staunch Supporter, Gone Too Soon.

Just before Christmas 2019, one of our most fierce and staunch supporters, Ms. Makelesi Wati Raisele, passed away here in New York City. She was 66.

From UTOPIA NYC’s unofficial inception in 2009, Wati has continuously provided her support largely behind the scenes. She sponsored the very first meeting of UTOPIA NYC in 2009. Over the years, she has contributed time, food and monetary donations towards UTOPIA NYC’s efforts to participate in the NYC Pride March and other events. In her own words, it was “all for a good cause.”

Wati, originally from Fiji and having also lived in Australia, moved to New York City almost 20 years ago. She is remembered by many for her unforgettable chicken curry, her generosity and her beautiful soul. A strong ally of LGBTQ+ Pacific people, she looked forward to every UTOPIA NYC event where she could cook for her “children”. We have been very fortunate to have known Wati and we will continue to celebrate her legacy in trying to be to others, what she was to us.

A Memorial Service in New York City will be held on Saturday February 1st, 2020. Please contact us for further details.
